Every parent knows that there are many different kinds of kids toys, and the top toys of 2008 are no exception. In fact, this year's best toys contain several classic product types, as well as newer and more innovative toys and games. The only true way to get an accurate sense of the top toys of 2008 is to examine a few exemplary examples of entertainment for all kids of all ages, including the young at heart.

Many people consider the overall top toy of 2008 to be the Air Hogs Havoc Heli Laser Battle, which is actually a two player set of remote controlled helicopters that make authentic battle noises. One reason this is considered to be one of the year's best toys is that fact that it has such a wide customer appeal. Though rated for children over three, even parents find it hard to resist and have reported that it is so easy that even a two year old can do it. All of the top toys of 2008 are parent as well as kid approved, but the helicopter stands out for the simple reason that it appeals equally to boys as girls, small children, or even adults.

Another top toy of the year is worth nothing because of its innovative yet classical concept. The Smart Cycle: Physical Learning Arcade uses technological advancements in video and game interaction to teach kids basic educational lessons, while also improving hand eye coordination. As popular among boys as girls, it is easy to see why it is one of the top toys of 2008. Toys for generations have been geared to practicing skill sets such as the ABC's and numbers, and the physical learning lab distinguishes itself as one of the best kids toys by instilling timeless lessons in a new, interesting, and effective way.

There are also a lot of variations of traditional games and products among the top toys of 2008 too. Just about every little girl likes cute pets and dolls, so it should come as no surprise that this year's most popular girls toy is a tie between the Littlest Pet Shop: Display and Play Round and Round Pet Town and the Troop Groovy Girls, modeled after the Girl Scouts of America. Girls' toys, however, are not the only variation of a classical theme. This year's top outdoor toy is the Ripstik, a caster board that allows kids to experience the fun of skateboarding in a safer way that also increases motor control and coordination. Appealing equally to both boys and girls while promoting regular exercise and physical activity, it is no wonder that this product made an appearance among the top toys of 2008.

The fact is toys change from year to year, but a lot remains the same. While technology has a big influence in evolving the world of toys for kids, many electronics and other modern toys still fit into a classical theme that has been entertaining kids for centuries, such as outdoor games, educational products, and even those like dolls and action figures that we associate with one particular gender.

Digital cameras come in every size, shape, color, and price range these days.  Obviously, adults enjoy the benefits of digital photography, but what about children?  Should a child have a digital camera?  Some experts say that when children take photographs, they learn to see the world around them from a different perspective and they sometimes show enhanced creativity.  As a parent, you'll have the privilege of seeing things from their perspective and may even learn new things about your child through the pictures they take with their own camera.

There are several levels of digital cameras on the market today and several are perfectly good entry-level models for children preschool age, up to teenagers.  What should a parent consider when looking for a digital camera for their child?  Ease of use, photo quality, automated features and durability are just a few criteria to consider.

A toddler, preschooler, or early elementary child will do well with a basic and sturdy digital camera.  Look for one that is designed for little hands to grip and hold easily.  Flash and focus features should be completely automatic, and the memory card should hold several photographs at one time.  Fisher Price makes durable digital cameras specifically for little ones.  The color LCD screen is 1.3" across so children can immediately see the picture they just took and show it to everyone in the family too.  Children can use this camera like a pair of binoculars with the camera's two-eye viewing feature, which makes it especially fun for them to scout out their next picture.  Fisher Price makes these cameras in bright colors for added kid appeal too.  There is even a USB cord included with the camera so your child's pictures can easily be transferred to the computer, once again freeing up storage space for more picture adventures.

Children who are between early elementary age and middle school age will enjoy even an inexpensive digital camera, as long as it takes decent photographs.  Look for a sturdily built digital camera, because children this age often tend to drop things on a regular basis, including cameras.  Find a middle of the road camera that has automated features for the most part, but allows some control over flash and zoom capabilities.  Some digital cameras for this age include special effects features like clip art and captions and possibly the ability to take short movie clips with audio.  Girls in this age range will probably want to accessorize their digital camera with a cute camera case and strap.

By the time your children reach middle school and grow into older teenagers, a digital camera that looks and functions more like an 'adult' camera, can be purchased for a reasonable price.  Depending on how much your child enjoys taking photos, look for a camera with more advanced features and more control over the zoom and flash features.  They'll likely be taking more photographs at this age, so look for a digital camera that has expandable memory options available as well.

Whether you spend $60 or $100, the price range is reasonable when purchasing a digital camera for your child.  Older children could be encouraged to help save toward purchasing one themselves.  Younger children might be more willing to complete their chores if they know the money they earn will go toward a digital camera they want.

The good news is that digital cameras for children have come down in price dramatically, so purchasing one for your child, regardless of their age, is within most parents' financial reach.

Everyone wants their child to become a doctor or engineer or s successful businessman. No doubt, every child has the potential but it needs to be churned. For this, one needs to build up interest of the child. Every child isn't born a scholar.  The grass root education matters a lot for child to gather pace to become something in life. How this starts? The answer is from your own home. There is no doubt that home can be called the first school of the child where a child learns everything. To make child acquainted with the things, the toys play an important role.

Educational toys always play an important role for letting the child to learn things. A child is blank and from the medium of toys he starts understanding things. In his early childhood, toys are his best friend as they keep surrounding him for most part of the day. So imparting education through educational toys is a novel idea.  When a child is in early childhood, he grabs the things in fastest manner through play and there educational toys plays their role. Educational toys can make him learn new things and also provide fun and happiness to child as these are toys and a child loves to play with toys. Thus through educational toys a child can grab more rather than any other means.
Market is flooded with different types of educational toys but it is up to you to select which kind of toy for your preschooler child.  To select educational toys you should have criteria to select them and following questions will help you to decide the criteria:

• Do you want to increase the imagination power of your child or need an educational toy?
• Is there some weakness in your child which you want to correct?
• What are the strengths of your child?
• Is the educational toy you are selecting for your child, meant for his age?
• Is the toy holds good reputation and holds plenty of good reviews that the toy will help your child in making his basics sound and clear?
• If other parents have used the same educational toy for their child, was it beneficial and seemed to work?

These are some questions which help you to make choice for educational toys for your child. You should forget that only educational toys are not meant to be bought for your child. For proper growth along with educational toys your child needs toys which are imaginative and should help in overcoming his weakness and making his strengths stronger. In other words, you need to have a balanced collection of electronic toys, educational toys and those toys which your child likes most like dolls, building blocks, and action icons. One must understand this thing that each child is different and it is not imperative that if one child loves educational toys, the other one also should have the same taste for educational toys and must should not force his/ her wishes on child at such a fancy age as it is the age where the child grows and the way he grows builds up the stage for his future.

Educational Toys Help Kids Develop Life Skills

The educational benefit of toys for child development cannot be underestimated. The basic human instinct in a child continues the pursuit for play and discovery into adulthood. Children develop fascination about their surroundings from playing with toys and take with them hobbies late into their adult life.

Educational Toys Help Kids Develop Life Skills
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Laeke_Gebre]Laeke Gebre

Educational Toys and Life Skills
Educational toys not only promote developmental skills in children. They also help children acquire and improve essential life skills. Creativity, self-confidence, independence, responsibility, and integrity can all be cultivated through the use of carefully selected educational toys.

Creativity
One hallmark of educational toys is how well they support creative, open-ended play. A tray of wooden food can inspire a child to spend a whole afternoon running a pretend restaurant or planting and harvesting crops on a pretend farm. A set of blocks can be turned into a tower, a road system, a fort, a car, or even different animals. And the possibilities for a pound of modeling clay are endless! The more time a child spends exploring all the different things a toy can become, the more developed the child's powers of imagination will be. This fosters an open-mindedness to new possibilities that will help the child think of creative and innovative solutions to any challenges he or she ends up facing as an adult.

Self-Confidence
One way to build self-confidence is through play that encourages a child to assert him or herself. Singing, performing, and acting in front of an audience all help children assert themselves both in the planning stage and during an actual performance. Children also learn to assert themselves by acting out scenarios or performing informally with peers. Open-ended toys such as musical instruments and dress-up clothes and props encourage this type of play.

Taking risks that pay off will also develop a child's self-confidence. Susan G. Solomon, author of American Playgrounds: Revitalizing Community Space, notes that "Children need a chance to take acceptable risks, learn cause and effect, make choices and see consequences. If they don't learn to take risks, we'll lose a generation of entrepreneurs and scientists."
To take such risks, children must develop powers of risk assessment and decision making so that they can be sure that the risks they plan to take are, in fact, acceptable. The act of riding and controlling large toys such as bicycles requires children to calculate physical risks. The logic needed to play certain strategy-based board games like Monopoly, chess, and checkers involves risk assessment such as whether or not to invest in a property or risk one piece for a future, greater gain.

To improve their ability to calculate risk, children should also develop their decision-making skills. Science and engineering kits can help by requiring children to use observations and directions to make decisions about how to run an experiment or build a working machine. Puzzles and building construction sets can also hone this skill.

Independence
In general, allowing children to direct their own play and be in charge of what to do during their free time helps them become more self-sufficient and resilient. In particular, certain educational toys foster skills such as problem solving, taking charge of a situation, and leadership.
One aspect of being independent is being able to solve a problem on your own. Working with a construction toy system allows a child to explore different solutions to the challenge of building various items. Logical challenges faced on your own, such as figuring out how to use a set of pattern blocks to replicate certain complicated patterns, also build problem-solving skills.

Another aspect of being independent is taking charge of a situation. This can be as simple as providing your baby with two toy choices and allowing the baby the autonomy to make his or her own decision about which to play with. Beyond that, you can also encourage the development of independence by allowing your child to direct what roles you will take on when playing with your child or letting your child be in charge of how a toy will be played with. Providing your child with open-ended play sets such as farms, fire and police stations, pirate ships, tree houses, and train stations creates a situation where your child can control what scenarios he or she will act out that day.

A third aspect of being independent is taking a leadership role. While unit blocks and communal building sets of oversized hollow wood blocks, huge foam blocks, or sturdy cardboard blocks can foster cooperation skills, they can also offer opportunities for one child to lead others in a positive way to build a specific construction that that child has in mind. Educational toys can also help children become self-motivated and self-directed so that they can lead themselves to accomplishments without always relying on outside support and affirmation.

Responsibility
To become good citizens, all children should develop a sense of personal, societal, and environmental responsibility. In general, trusting children to take good care of their toys, to play nicely with them and put them back where they belong when play is done, can begin to foster a sense of responsibility. At the most basic level, a chart such as Melissa and Doug's Magnetic Responsibility Chart can help a child keep track of his or her personal obligations. Beyond that, specific toys can develop other kinds of responsibility.

When a child is provided with an open-ended toy such as a construction set that must be assembled by the child, he or she will take on the personal responsibility of following the directions and making sure the toy is put together correctly. This will train the child to take a sense of pride and personal responsibility in any future jobs he or she is expected to do. And, when a child takes care of a doll or pretend pet, he or she also develops a sense of personal responsibility for fulfilling his or her obligations to someone else.

Role-playing of obligations can extend to creating a sense of responsibility to society. When a child pretends that he or she is a construction worker or a doctor, that child is practicing taking on adult responsibilities that must be fulfilled if people are to live together in communities. Such role-playing socializes the child and allows him or her to get used to the idea of becoming a contributing member to such a community once he or she is grown.

Finally, science kits that encourage children to study the earth can educate children about why people must take care of animals, land, resources, and so forth. Plus, toys that are crafted from sustainable materials (such as Plan Toys) or bioplastics (such as Green Toys), or designed to use recycled materials (such as the Uberstix Scavenger sets), encourage a respect for the conservation of natural resources. This in turn leads to a developed sense of responsibility for caring for the environment.

Integrity
Educational toys can also help children develop integrity. Using costumes and props to role-play situations such as customer and server can help children practice politeness and manners. Acting out scenarios such as taking care of an injured doll or animal can foster compassion and empathy. And playing competitive games fairly by taking turns and following the rules develops a child's appreciation for right and wrong.

The educational benefit of toys for child development cannot be underestimated. The childhood pursuit for play and discovery continues into adulthood. Children develop fascination about their surroundings from playing with toys and continue to pick up hobbies late into their adult life.

4 Great Wooden Toys For Your Child
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gabriel_J._Adams]Gabriel J. Adams

It is hard to deny that wooden toys have a unique appeal to children of all ages. Grandparents remember when the wooden pull car was the favorite indoor and outdoor toy. Sometimes the wooden toy was hand fashioned by a favorite relative. Other times, wooden toys were created by the child. No matter how crude the product might appear to the uninitiated, in the child's eyes the vrooom noises made the crudely carved block into a real car and the wooden blocks into a steam locomotive.

Fond memories of some of the favorite childhood wooden toys make today's modern equivalents just as popular as the originals from 100 years ago.

Blocks

The classic wooden blocks are one of children's favorite toys. Usually a set of blocks will contain about 30 brightly colored 2-inch blocks. The blocks contain numbers from 0-9, letters from A-Z and imaginative pictures of simple objects easily identified by the child. The slightly raised letter and numerals are safely finished in red, blue, yellow or green. These blocks are suitable for stacking, sorting, building, counting, alphabet, and matching

Pound-A-Peg

Remember the carpenter's bench with the small pegs that could be placed in the holes in the bench? You used the small wooden mallet to pound each of the pegs level with the surface of the bench, then turned the entire unit over and pounded the pegs back through. Today's bench is virtually identical to the ones of half a century ago. Today's toy measures 11.6 inches by 5 inches. The platform is natural wood with red ends and mallet. The pegs are finished in red, blue, yellow and green. The toy is great for developing eye-hand coordination, color recognition, matching and counting.

Stick Horse

A favorite of children for years, the broomstick horse, sometimes with a mane of yarn attached could be the faithful steed when playing Wild West Shows, or a valiant knight fighting a dragon. It is all in the imagination. This is one of the simplest wooden toys--originally simply a stick and a horse head shape on the end. The lucky child who received a cowboy hat and fringed vest to wear could pretend to be any number of western heroes.

Train Set

A set of wooden train cars, carefully shaped and painted to resemble the various types of cars in a real steam train was also a child's favorite wooden toy. There usually is a steam engine with the exaggerated cow catcher on the front and the steam vent, needing only imagination and a whistle--usually supplied by the child--to seem real. The coal car, the flat cars and boxcars and of course the caboose are a set good for hours of play for the child. Contrary to the real thing, the wooden train cars are often printed in bright primary colors.

When it comes to plastic toys and wooden toys, there is more of a chance that plastic toys will be purchased. However, consumers don't seem to consider buying a wooden toy for their kid instead. In a few ways, it would be more worth the while to get.

Let's think of a few differences between the two. Plastic toys: they can break easily and the edges could harm the little children. Wooden toys, on the other hand, are more durable. If you were to stand on a toy truck made of plastic, there is a great chance that it will break, possibly leaving sharp edges that could cut your child; and be fit only for the rubbish.

Standing on a wooden truck is more likely to result in damage to you or whoever stood on the truck though one wouldn't actually suggest it. They can be played with for years and years and still look like new. Speaking of years and years, wooden toys may provide family stories and build up fun memories in the mind. When after so many years you get to see your very old toy, as they are very durable, old memories freshen up. Wooden toys can be passed on from generation to generation. Because the design is very seldom complex, they don't date.

Here are some more reasons why wooden toys should be chosen over plastic. Many plastic toys are mechanized and do a lot on their own without the help of the kid. Wooden toys tend to be more passive, which means that the child has to become more involved and this can stimulate their imagination and be more stimulating. A more passive toy may also encourage greater problem solving skills. Another reason is wooden toys can make for a nice decoration for your home when the child outgrows them.

Wooden toys do not contain any harmful chemicals whereas plastic toys contain PVC also known as Vinyl which can be harmful to children should they ever put the toy in their mouth. Provided they are not painted with lead based paint which is only likely if it is an heirloom or if it is a cheap foreign import, wooden toys do not present any health hazard whereas plastic toys can be full of chemicals that are harmful if the child ever puts the toy in their mouth.

Wooden toys give a picture of the craftsmanship as compared to a plastic toy. Plastic toys generally do not depict any creativity by hand. Therefore, wooden toys are considered to be better than plastic toys. They bring joys and refresh memories in the future.
